Time To Help Joplin

May 23, 2011

***DISCLAIMER*** – None of the businesses or groups donating time, resources, or services for this event, have any involvement with The Democratic Club of Randolph County.  Information for this event is being shared through a multitude of networks and resources, and we wanted to stress that NO group, business or person is solely responsible.  This is a community event, with coordination through area schools, churches, businesses, groups and volunteers.

Most of you are fully aware of the horrible tornado in Joplin yesterday.  The last I knew, there were over 90+ confirmed deaths and still many people unaccounted for.  Officials estimated that the toll could be over 100 by the end of the day, making this one of the worst tornadoes in Missouri history.  I have also seen reports that an estimated 40% of the town is gone.  As if the pictures and video we have all seen by now wasn’t bad enough.

While we can’t replace a loved one lost or a lifetime of memories swept away, we can begin to help our friends to the south begin to pick up the pieces.  And that is exactly what we are going to do.  I have organized a supply drive on Wednesday, May 25th at 8 A.M, at the Sears lot on Morley Street in Moberly.  We are coordinating with the Salvation Army of Joplin to accept donations for the victims of the Joplin tornado.  We are accepting factory sealed food items (potato chips, crackers, pop top canned goods, baby food – NO packaged meat or items that need to be refrigerated), small amounts of clothing, blankets, pillows, day to day toiletries (tooth brush, deodorant, toilet paper), diapers, etc.  Please have your items boxed, your clothes bagged, and have them ready to set onto a truck and be stacked and wrapped on a pallet.  We will have a team of volunteers there assisting with loading of items, as well as donation runners that will come to a place of business and pick up items.  We will NOT accept cash donations.  Those need to be directed to the Red Cross of the Ozarks.

We will be on the lot until the truck is full or until the early evening.  Please do not hesitate to stop in.

I would also like to thank Mid-Am Building Supply and The Knaebel family for donating a truck, a trailer, a driver and a day off or two to allow me to organize this.  I would also like to thank Sears of Moberly for allowing us to drop a tractor trailer in the lot.  I would like to thank my team of volunteers that have offered their services, the Moberly Chamber of Commerce for helping spread the word, KRES Radio and everyone else that has helped up to this point.   This is a coordinated effort between many area groups, businesses and people.

Let’s get to work!
