Former State Rep. Ted Farnen

The October meeting of the Randolph County Democrat Club will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, at Nelly’s in Moberly with former Rep. Ted Farnen as speaker.

The social time will begin at 6, dinner at 6:30, and program/meeting at 7 p.m. Hosts for the evening will be Jim and Cathy Sears.  Reservations may be made by calling 660-277-4713 or 660-456-7146 by 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Special guest speaker former State Representative Ted Farnen from Columbia, is currently the director of communications for the Missouri Department of Revenue. He has had one of the most diverse careers in Missouri state government.

As a student at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Farnen was an intern for the Missouri House of Representatives Information Office. Upon graduating from Mizzou in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, he became a reporter for the Sedalia Democrat, and wrote numerous stories about state government issues and elected officials.

In 1989, Farnen was hired as an information officer for the Missouri Senate Communications Office. In 1994, after having previously moved back to his hometown of Mexico, MO, he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives as the state representative from the 21st District. He was re-elected to the post in 1996, 1998 and 2000. Highlights of his term as a House member included chairing the House Higher Education Committee, serving as majority caucus chairman, being the primary sponsor of some 25 bills that became law and the principal author of two constitutional amendments later approved by Missouri voters. He received numerous local and state awards for his service in the House.

After his term in the House, Farnen was the political director for the Missouri Laborers’ Union and a chief of staff in the Missouri Senate. He joined the Department of Revenue in 2009.

Farnen has also been active in the Democratic Party, having served as a member of the Cole and Audrain Democratic Central Committees. He also served a two-year term on the Missouri Democratic State Committee, and has been a delegate to the Missouri State Democratic Convention on numerous occasions. Farnen, 46, currently resides in Columbia.
